When selecting award winners, our judge, Kami Mendlik used the following criteria — but finally, in the end it was where her heart pulled her.

  • Paintings that have carrying power from across the room
  • Simplification of shapes
  • A strong armature
  • Decisions on what does not have to be in the painting
  • Handling and sophistication of the medium

When selecting award winners, our judge Doug Dawson in general explained and used the following criteria:

  • use of complimentary colors adjacent to each other;
  • use of edges that added some mystique, some precise, other more loosely delineated;
  • use of precise drawing;
  • overall color balance that combined color intensity with reticent areas, also combining light and shadow; and
  • painting that ‘popped’ or stood out!
